Forum - The Main Causes of Failure in the Sony SS-VX700 Bellers (Hôte)
| | Guys, I happened to get my hands on a pair of speakers from an old Sony SS-VX700 stereo system. They look pretty impressive, of course, but the sound is a problem: on one speaker, the low frequencies have started to wheeze noticeably, and on the other, the high frequencies seem to have dropped out—the sound has become muffled and dull. I’d like to restore them for my summer house, since they have good potential, but I’m not quite sure where to start taking them apart. Does anyone know what the main issues with this model tend to crop up over time? | | | | Bellers (Hôte)
| | I suspect the speaker suspensions might have stiffened up or, conversely, dried out over time. Or is this a typical issue with the internal electronics, like dried-out capacitors in the crossover? I’m also worried about breaking the plastic clips on the grilles when I open it up—are they stuck tight, or is there some trick to it? | | | | Sewdon (Hôte)
| | There’s also a chance that the microchips have corroded or moisture got in there; that’s a pain, but fixable. Just take it apart completely and check the condition of the circuit board. You can use the service manual for Sony SS-VX700 for this; it was written for technicians, in case you want to send it in for repair. By the way, how are you with electronics? Have you ever had any problems when you wanted to fix something? A colleague of mine had a similar experience—he got into the wiring, but since he doesn’t have any formal training, he forgot to turn off the power to the house. I still don’t understand how he got so lucky that he didn’t get electrocuted; that was a huge stroke of luck. |
